This meditation is the first in the pain series that was developed for a research study at the University of New Mexico on the effects of meditation for people in pain. Because it can be so difficult to sit in meditation when we are in pain, the meditations in this series start off short and get longer week to week, building on our ability to cultivate peaceful states for longer intervals with practice. Another approach can be to let this meditation simply run into the second in the series (Settling the Mind on the Breath) when you are ready to sit longer, and continuing forward like that. Or if you’re not interested in sitting for longer, this meditation stands alone as well.
