LAKE ATITLAN, GUATEMALA | DECEMBER 5 – 12, 2021

INSIGHT MEDITATION RETREAT  |  DEC 5 – 12, 2021  |  THE MINDFUL CENTER

Join Michelle DuVal, MA, director of The Mindful Center for an incredible week long immersive meditation retreat focused on relaxation, well being, and developing greater insight into our lives, our struggles, and how we begin to live more fully, with less stress and greater ease… all while staying on the shores of one of the
most incredible natural lakes in the world –
 Lake Atitlán in Guatemala.

Lake Atitlán is a truly magical place and is consistently listed as one of the word’s top ten most beautiful lakes – naturally formed and held by three volcanoes in the gorgeous Mayan highlands of Guatemala.
“Atitlan” means “the place where the rainbow gets its colors.”

The retreat itself will consist of daily teachings and practice with Michelle, all designed to first meet us where we are as we leave our normal lives and enter this truly magical space, and then go deeper, allowing insight into areas of our mind and lives that is almost impossible to access during our busy day-to-day experience.

This will not be a silent retreat, although there will be times of silent meditation.

Michelle teaches insight meditation practices by first enabling students to create a safe refuge for themselves within 3 basic elements: 1. The retreat space itself. 2. The group. 3. Their own meditation. Once this is established, a process of ever deepening inquiry allows us to gain insight into our lives like never before.  We practice seeing our lives more clearly, where we’re getting hung up, and what the pathways forward might be, with the ultimate ‘goal’ being a deeper connection to peace and freedom that we can take back home with us, in our hearts and minds.

As insight deepens, we develop greater equanimity in the face of change, and wisdom and compassion increasingly become the guiding principles of our lives.

See below for the complete schedule for the retreat.

To reserve your space, you will choose one of three accommodation types – either the Lotus House, the Ginger House, or the Skyline Bungalow.  Pricing depends on occupancy – single, double, or some even have an option for triple. Based on your preferences/ occupancy, we will send you a final balance amount which will be due to fully reserve your spot at the retreat.

In regards to Covid and the new Delta variant, we are watching things closely.  If everything shuts down again and travel is restricted, making it impossible for us to leave the US, everyone will receive a full refund.  Right now, travelers returning to the US need to show proof of a negative Covid test within 3 days of travel.  We will be organizing this with the help of our hotel….we will update here as more details become available.

Travel Info

LAKE RETREAT  |  DEC 5-12, 2021  |  THE MINDFUL CENTER

International Travel can be stressful.  We’re here to make things as easy and supported as possible.  Many of our retreat participants are folks traveling alone…Michelle can do a lot to help people find others along the journey, as well as make catching shuttles and airport to hotel transport as stress-free as possible.

Villa Sumaya is located on the shores of Lake Atitlán near the village of Santa Cruz la Laguna.

Please plan your flights to arrive and depart from Guatemala City. We will collect your flight details and group you together to share private shuttles for the drive from Guatemala City to Panajachel. From Panajachel, you will take a short boat ride to the Villa Sumaya Dock.
We will organize the shuttle and boat ride.

If you can, we recommend arriving in Guatemala City on Saturday, December 4th. We recommend staying at Hotel Barceló, which offers a free airport shuttle. Our personal shuttle will pick everyone up from this hotel on the morning of the 5th.

The retreat ends with breakfast on Sunday December 12. The return shuttle will depart after breakfast and should arrive in Guatemala City in the early afternoon. We recommend booking a late afternoon flight out of Guatemala City, or stay overnight and leave Monday December 13.

We’re happy to answer any travel questions you have.

FAQ's

Yes! Villa Sumaya accommodates most special dietary restrictions like allergies, vegan and gluten-free diets. They serve fresh healthy meals that are simple but incredibly wholesome and delicious. You are also welcome to bring anything you choose to supplement your meals.  Before we depart, Michelle will be in touch with everyone about any dietary concerns.

Yes! Though most meals have a protein source (eggs, beans, cheese, nuts, etc.), if you need more,  chicken or fish may be added to meals at $7 per portion.  This cost would be added to your personal hotel bill.

The buffet style meals are abundant and well balanced. If you have extreme allergies or strict dietary needs, you may want to bring some supplemental foods, as they might not be able to change their entire menu. Villa Sumaya offers a raw fruit and veggie juice bar with exotic smoothies, raw cacao and granola treats, chocolates, kombucha and other delights for in-between meals.  These additional snacks and smoothies are not included in your retreat and will be added to your personal hotel bill.

It is not!  You must drink bottled water. Villa Sumaya provides unlimited filtered water free of charge for every guest, available at all times.

Yoga mats, blankets, blocks, straps, eye pillows, and folding chairs are provided. In most cases, you are all set.  If you wish to bring along a travel meditation cushion…awesome!

There are two computers available to guests with complimentary internet service.  These are for quick email check-ins only. If you’d like to have internet service on your own device Villa Sumaya charges $3 per day or $20 for the week. Calls to the U.S. are $1.50 per minute.

Children are welcome at Villa Sumaya. For children 6-12 years old the fee is $45 per day. For children 3-5 years old, $25 per day. For children 2 and under the rate is $15 per day. The rate for teenagers is the same as adults.  This includes 3 vegetarian meals per day and the room shared with their parent/s. The hotel also can provide child care for an extra fee of $5 per hour.  One thing to think about is how having your kids might impact your retreat experience. Most people find it a little harder to relax into the retreat experience with their kids around, but then again this might be something you’d wish to share with them! So whatever you wish to do is welcomed by us!

YES!  Bring your suits! Villa Sumaya has a beautiful dock space with lounge chairs and guests are often found sunning on the lake and swimming off the dock. Villa Sumaya has a beautiful spa area with a natural stone solar-heated hot tub and a wood-fire sauna. The hot tub is available (sun permitting) and is complimentary. The sauna must be ordered in advanced and is $30 for a 1.5 hour sweat.
